Larry McGearty, US President and Chief Creative Officer of The Mighty Shed brings us his latest foray in alcohol this month. After years of perfecting the concept, taste profile and developing the brand, Sweet Gwendoline French Gin, a fig infused gin sourced and distilled in France, is hitting the shelves across the United States on November 1.
Larry partnered with Dita Von Teese, international burlesque star, on this latest project. Both Larry and Dita have been long-time fans of the artwork of John Willie—a fetish artist who created BIZARRE magazine in 1946 and Sweet Gwendoline, his most enduring character.
Larry’s background in developing spirits brands merged with his interest in fringe culture to create Sweet Gwendoline. “I’ve always been obsessed with John Willie. He was a pioneer and his magazine BIZARRE…it opened the window into a lifestyle rarely seen in its time, which continues to influence the culture of today. Through his illustrations and photography, he told the stories of women, people of all ethnicities, LGBTQ, different body types, and other-abled people all living their truth.”
Dita Von Teese has long appreciated John Willie’s artistry. “The art of John Willie has been a constant source of inspiration for me and my career since the early years, both in my performance and fashion. John Willie is always with me.”
Sweet Gwendoline French Gin is sourced and created in the south of France at Destillerie des Terres Rouges, an organic-certified distillery. The liquid contains botanical notes of juniper, coriander, cardamom, orange, lemon, lime, pepper, and infused with figue de sollies—a variety of fig grown in southern France. The finish is a blanc-de-blanc champagne wine created with Chardonnay grapes.
The design and packaging honor John Willie’s artwork and legacy. The logo features the whip character from the front cover of BIZARRE magazine issue No. 19 from 1956. The bottle design is inspired by vintage perfume bottles and corset construction, as seen in John Willie’s illustrations.
